U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed a $1.5 trillion defense budget for 2027, the largest in decades, underscoring a heightened focus on military spending amid the ongoing U.S.-led war against Iran. The proposal released Friday outlines a significant increase in Pentagon funding while calling for a 10% reduction in non-defense spending by shifting certain responsibilities to state and local governments, the Associated Press reported. “President Trump is committed to rebuilding our military and ensuring peace through strength,” the budget document said.
The administration plans to allocate about $1.1 trillion to defense through the regular appropriations process and expects to allocate an additional $350 billion through budget reconciliation, which would allow Republicans to pass measures without Democratic support. The budget reflects Trump’s priorities for military spending, which he reiterated ahead of a national address on the Iran conflict.“We’re at war. We can’t take care of day care,” Trump said at a private event at the White House. “We can’t possibly take care of day care, Medicaid, Medicare and all these individual things,” he added, suggesting those responsibilities should be handled at the state level.
In addition to defence, the budget outlines several targeted allocations:
The plan also eliminates the Refugee Resettlement Assistance Program while continuing to fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The proposal comes as the United States faces an annual deficit of nearly $2 trillion and a national debt of more than $39 trillion. A large portion of federal spending continues to be driven by entitlement programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. However, the President’s budget only serves as a policy blueprint and does not have the force of law. Congress, which controls federal spending, can modify or reject it.The document, written by Budget Director Russ Vought, is intended to guide lawmakers in drafting appropriations bills. The administration relies on the Republican majority to push key priorities, particularly defense spending.
The budget proposal comes amid an ongoing deadlock in Congress over funding this year, particularly for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Lawmakers remain divided over immigration policy, with Democrats pursuing reforms that Republicans oppose.Trump said he will sign an executive order to ensure that Department of Homeland Security employees are paid during the long partial government shutdown that has been extended to 49 days.
The 2027 budget builds on Trump’s earlier push to shrink the size of the federal government, including efforts related to cost-cutting initiatives. However, Congress has previously resisted deep cuts to domestic programs, leaving spending levels relatively stable in many areas.
