Trump touts end to nine wars, says ‘willing’ to make Russia-Ukraine war a 10th

“I’d love to see it end,” Trump told reporters at the White House before heading to a golf course in Sterling, Va., for dinner. “I’ve dealt with eight wars, nine actually, and it looks like we could have ten wars, but I’d love to make it a tenth. “That would be great. I would like to see it stop,” he added, referring to ongoing clashes and the possibility of extending the brief three-day ceasefire he announced earlier.

Earlier, Trump announced a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, noting that the temporary ceasefire coincided with Russia’s celebration of Victory Day, commemorating the then-Soviet Union’s role in World War II.

Trump posted on Truth Social that the ceasefire would be in place from May 9 to 11 and would include suspending “all dynamic activity” between the two countries.

“I am happy to announce that there will be a three-day ceasefire in the war between Russia and Ukraine (May 9, 10 and 11). Celebrations in Russia are about Victory Day, but so are Ukraine, as they were also an important part and factor in World War II,” the post read.

Speaking to reporters, Trump further described the Russia-Ukraine war as “the worst thing that has happened to my life since World War II” and claimed that “25,000 young soldiers [are killed] per month,” but provided no evidence of that number.

Regarding the three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, the US president said both sides have agreed to suspend hostilities.

“I asked President Putin and President Zelensky and they were both happy to [agreed]. We have a period where they won’t kill people,” he said.

He further expressed his support for extending the ceasefire, saying: “Yes, I would like to see a significant extension of the ceasefire. [of the ceasefire between the two countries]”.

In the post, the US president expressed hope that a temporary cessation of hostilities would mark “the beginning of the end” of the ongoing war. The war enters its fifth year in February 2026, following a full-scale Russian invasion in 2022.

Trump said the request for a temporary truce came directly from him, noting that the deal would also include a prisoner exchange of 1,000 prisoners from each side.

“This ceasefire will include the suspension of all dynamic activities and the exchange of 1,000 prisoners from each country. This request was made directly by me and I am very grateful to Presidents Vladimir Putin and Vladimir Zelensky for agreeing. Hopefully this is the beginning of the end of a long, deadly and difficult war,” the post added.

The US president further noted that ongoing discussions aim to permanently end the war, which he described as the “largest” since World War II.

The US president added: “Negotiations to end the worst major conflict since World War II continue and we are getting closer every day. Thank you for your attention.”
