Mojtaba Khamenei: Iran’s new supreme leader

Mojtaba KhameneiThe second son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed on the first day of the conflict launched by the United States and Israel against Iran, has been named Iran’s new supreme leader, state media reported.

The 56-year-old hardline cleric’s mother, wife and one of his sisters were also killed in the attack that killed his father. However, the young Khamenei was reportedly absent at the time and has so far endured heavy Iranian bombardment.

The Assembly of Iranian Experts – the 88-member clerical body responsible for electing the country’s supreme leader – urged Iranians to remain united and express support for Mojtaba Khamenei.

In a statement released through state media on Sunday, parliament said Khamenei was appointed after a “decisive vote.”

It calls on all Iranians, especially elites and scholars from seminaries and universities, to pledge allegiance to the leadership and remain united.

Trump calls Khamenei’s son a ‘lightweight’

Trump told Axios in a separate interview that it would be “unacceptable” for Mojtaba Khamenei, the 56-year-old son of the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, to take over as the new leader of the Islamic Republic. He expressed his desire for a leader who can “bring harmony and peace to Iran.”

Trump said appointing someone who could continue Khamenei’s policies would inevitably lead the United States back to war “within five years.”

Before the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei, Trump insisted that the United States should play a role in identifying Iran’s next leader, as it had previously done with Venezuela.

“They are wasting time. Khamenei’s son is a lightweight. I have to be involved in this appointment, just like Delsi [Rodriguez] In Venezuela,” the president said.

The appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran’s supreme leader has led the country’s ultra-conservatives to challenge the United States and Israel, demonstrating their determination to continue the conflict, experts told AFP.
