Three British men plead guilty in connection with death of Canadian restaurateur who was killed over $150 in unpaid bill | World News

Sharif Rahman Canadian restaurateur

Three British men have admitted they were involved in the death of a Canadian restaurateur who was seriously injured following a dispute over an unpaid restaurant bill in Ontario.Robert Evans Jr, 25, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Sharif Rahman, 44, at a Canadian court hearing on Friday. Rahman, a restaurateur and father, died days after an argument outside a restaurant in Owen Sound in August 2023.The case stemmed from an argument over an unpaid restaurant bill of $150. Prosecutors said the conflict occurred outside a curry restaurant in Ontario Township, about 190 kilometers northwest of Toronto.Rahman was later found lying in the street by a staff member and taken to hospital in London, Ontario, where he died from his injuries a week later.Robert Evans Jr.’s father, Robert Busby Evans, 49, and his uncle, Barry Evans, 56, later pleaded guilty to being accessories to the crime. Both men were sentenced to time served for which they had already served. The three men, believed to be from Manchester, were extradited from Scotland to Canada in 2025 after being arrested by Police Scotland. Authorities detained Robert Evans Jr and his father in Edinburgh, while Barry Evans was arrested in Dalkeith.According to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Canadian media previously reported that the men traveled to the country on holiday visas and left Canada shortly after the incident.Robert Evans Jr. will be sentenced next month.Owen Sound police told the BBC that the two elderly men had been transferred to Canada Border Services Agency custody and were expected to be deported. The case also involves legal challenges during extradition proceedings. Lawyers representing the two older men have sought to block their extradition by arguing that accessory after the fact has no direct equivalent under Scottish law. Canadian authorities eventually secured their transfer for prosecution.Rahman’s death has sparked intense concern in the local community, with residents and business owners calling for justice after the popular restaurateur died from injuries sustained during the confrontation.
