“Sanju Samson’s life has come full circle,” Gavaskar told Star Sports. “He didn’t perform well in the series against New Zealand before the 2026 T20 World Cup. He was dropped and then after the T20 World Cup started, he got a chance against Namibia but his batting was not enough to retain his spot.”Samson’s early struggles saw him sidelined again before India gave him another chance in the Super 8 stage.“He next played directly against Zimbabwe in the Super Eights, but his real redemption began in the virtual quarter-finals against West Indies,” Gavaskar explained. Also read: ‘Samson is a combination of Kohli and Rohit’: Kumble after T20 WC masterclassThat game caused a stir. Samson then hit a match-winning 97 against the West Indies, an attacking 89 in the semi-final against England and another 89 in the final against New Zealand, helping India register a crushing 96-run victory in Ahmedabad.Gavaskar stressed that such performances in high-pressure situations define a cricketer’s legacy.“These games determine your destiny and will define his career. It takes something special to play key moments in high-pressure games,” he said.“Carrying the scars of failure and then playing the best performance of his career in three back-to-back high-pressure games — that’s Sanju Samson.”The former India captain also highlighted India’s immense achievements in defending the world title.“Winning the ICC trophy is not easy. The dominance is different between the two sides. There is zero margin for error in ICC matches,” Gavaskar said. “Winning back-to-back T20 World Cups is a huge achievement. It’s the best moment in the history of Indian cricket.”
