New Delhi: TVK chief Vijay will be sworn in as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu on May 7 after winning the 108-seat state assembly elections, ANI reported on Tuesday, citing sources. The swearing-in ceremony is likely to be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai.Vijay’s party emerged as the single largest party in the Tamil Nadu polls but failed to surpass a majority with just 10 seats. TVK has yet to decide which party it will align with.
To secure a majority and form the government, Tamiraja Vetri Kazhagam is likely to seek support from smaller parties such as the Congress, People’s Democratic Movement, Left Party, CPM and CPV, whose combined efforts can help the party cross a majority. On forging an alliance with TVK, AICC Tamil Nadu chief Girish Chodankar said the party leadership would accept the call.ANI quoted him as saying, “The people of Tamil Nadu have voted for change. Especially the youth and women have turned to TVK and that is why the numbers in TVK are so high. I have submitted a report to our Congress president Kharge ji, Opposition Lok Sabha leader Rahul ji and organization general secretary Venugopal ji. All of them will appeal to Tamil Nadu on what should be done.”Opposition Lok Sabha leader Rahul Gandhi congratulated Vijay after his resounding victory on Monday. “I spoke to Thiru Vijay and congratulated him on TVK’s impressive achievements. This mandate reflects the rising voice of the youth which cannot and will not go unnoticed. My sincere gratitude to Congress workers in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry for their hard work and support. I reiterate that the Congress will continue to protect and serve the people of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. “In this regard, Vijay said: “I sincerely thank the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha for his appeal and good wishes! We will continue to be committed to excellence in public service and uphold the cultural ethos of our country that requires collective cooperation. Apart from politics, we will prioritize the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu.”Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated TVK chief for the party’s “impressive performance”.“Thanks to the voters of Tamil Nadu who supported the NDA in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. We will always be at the forefront of solving the problems of the people and improving their lives. Congratulations to TVK for its excellent performance. The Center will leave no stone unturned for the progress of Tamil Nadu and the welfare of the people,” he said in a post on X.Vijay thanked him and said the party looked forward to “the support of the federal government in this endeavour”.“Thank you @PMOIndia Sir for your greetings. The welfare of our people remains our only goal. Beyond politics, we will focus on the progress of the state and the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu. We look forward to the federal government’s support in this endeavour,” he said in a post on X.
If Vijay’s party chooses not to form an alliance, it has the option of forming a minority government as the single largest party.“Vijay does not need to form a majority government. He can be invited by the governor to form the government and conduct a grassroots test and dare the DMK and AIADMK to vote him out,” PTI quoted political commentator Sumanth Raman as saying. However, if TVK forms a minority government, it will have to rely on the support of the opposition parties to successfully pass legislation in parliament.
With both the DMK and AIADMK alliances weakened after the election results, TVK could also explore the possibility of defecting to the rival camp to gain support. Riding on the political momentum generated by Vijay’s rise, the party may attract individual MLAs or disaffected factions within existing alliances who see the TVK-led government as the new center of political power in the state.
