In a city known for its record-breaking skyscrapers, one of its most stunning architectural achievements is hidden in the historic center of Udmeta. The Nasr Mosque (also known as the Nasr Grand Mosque) is a unique masterpiece in the UAE landscape. While most traditional mosques feature solid stone domes, Al Nasr breaks the mold with a structure that gives the impression of reaching up to the sky.
At the start of Ramadan 2026, Sharjah opened the Al Nasr Mosque, a striking new prayer space designed to serve more than 1,300 worshipers and bring spiritual and architectural beauty to the community.Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, officially opened the mosque on the night of the moon-watching announcement confirming the arrival of Ramadan.Located in the Jabal Omar neighborhood of Al Dhaid, the mosque spans over 7,800 square meters and provides a space for prayer, reflection and social interaction for residents of Sharjah and nearby areas.
The architectural centerpiece of the Nasr Mosque is its large spherical glass dome:
Next to the dome stands a 38-meter-high minaret, whose soft and flowing lines are a modern interpretation of the silhouette of a classical mosque, blending in with the rounded dome rather than strictly following tradition.
The layout of the mosque has been carefully designed to create a sense of comfort and community, providing ample space for worshipers to gather. The main prayer hall provides an intimate setting for 470 worshipers, while the spacious external courtyard and outdoor prayer area can accommodate an additional 1,180 male worshipers, ensuring that large congregations can pray together during peak times. The dedicated women’s prayer hall provides a private and tranquil space for 145 worshipers, bringing the total capacity to more than 1,300 people. In addition to its primary function as a place of worship, the mosque serves as a comprehensive community center. It is equipped with necessary amenities including modern bathing areas, toilets and water stations. For staff and ongoing spiritual guidance, the complex includes the Imam’s residence. It also looks to the future of the community, with practical facilities such as a public reading library and mortuary and ample parking spaces. The interior architecture emphasizes openness and tranquility; the hall is bathed in natural light, complemented by a modern mimbar (pulpit) with built-in soft lighting that enhances the spiritual atmosphere without overwhelming worshipers.
The inauguration of the Al-Nasr Mosque is part of a larger nationwide effort to enhance mosque facilities and support growing congregational numbers across the UAE. In Sharjah, this initiative has led to the construction and renovation of dozens of mosques, ensuring that every community has a modern, well-equipped place of worship. Across the UAE, mosques are expanding their role beyond prayer by launching creative Ramadan programs for families and children to encourage community engagement. These efforts are supported by practical measures such as providing free parking spaces for worshipers in busy areas, reflecting the UAE’s commitment to making the spiritual journey of Ramadan as easy as possible for everyone to enjoy and benefit from it.
