New Delhi: For Gautam Gambhirone idea trumps every statistic, every personal milestone and every century celebrated in the record books. Trophies are important. Not so with Milestones.Push boundaries with our YouTube channel. Subscribe now!The India head coach reiterated this philosophy after India beat New Zealand by 96 runs in the final to claim their third ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title on Sunday. Even while celebrating a crushing, epoch-making victory, Gambhir used the moment to remind everyone what really matters.
“I think my simple philosophy for Surya has always been that milestones don’t matter. What matters is trophies,” Gambhir said of the T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav. “In Indian cricket, we talk about milestones for too long. I hope, until I get there, we won’t talk about milestones.”The former India opener, who also scored the highest score for his team in two international ICC finals during his playing days, did not mince words while talking to the media. His message is clear: Stop sugarcoating personal numbers. Also read: Firm philosophy, flexible strategy: How Gambhir helped India tame the fickle nature of T20“Stop celebrating milestones, celebrate trophies,” Gambhir said. “That’s important because the larger purpose of team sports is to win trophies, not individual points. That’s never been important to me and it never will be.”Gambhir said the current Indian team under Suryakumar has fully embraced this mentality. “I’m lucky that Surya and I are on the same page, especially on this,” he added.he quoted Sanzhou Samson At the end of the game as a perfect example of this approach. Samson’s explosive performances – including a 97-point performance in the virtual quarterfinals and clutch scores in the semifinals and final – were built around team needs rather than individual milestones.“You can see what Sanju has done in the last three games,” Gambhir said. “Imagine if you had been fighting for a milestone, we probably wouldn’t have reached 250.”Off the field, Gambhir also shrugged off the social media criticism that has often followed him during India’s highs and lows.“My responsibility is not to any social media,” he said. “My responsibility is to those 30 guys sitting in the locker room.”For Gambhir, the team environment itself is built on something deeper than results—trust.“You pick teams based on trust and belief. You can’t pick teams based on hope,” he explained. “When you pick someone you trust and believe in, you don’t lose it after four or five games.”
