Spirit Airlines is reportedly facing a deepening crisis, with fears the airline could face closure after failing to reach a major $500 million rescue deal with the Trump administration.

Donald Trump said on Friday that his administration has made a “final” bailout proposal to Spirit Airlines as the airline faces the possibility of liquidation without financial backing. Discussions with bondholders this week have reportedly resulted in no agreement so far.
Speaking at the White House on Friday, Trump said, “If we can do it, we will do it, but only if we make a deal by the end of the week, because they haven’t made a deal yet.” He added, “I said I want to save jobs, but we’re going to make an announcement sometime today… We gave them a final proposal.”
Additionally, President Donald Trump hinted at potential government aid on Tuesday, saying CNBC “Squawk Box”, “Spirit is in trouble and I hope someone buys Spirit. It provides 14,000 jobs and maybe the federal government should bail this guy out.”

according to CNBCDuring an April 23 hearing in New York bankruptcy court, the airline’s attorney, Marshall Huebner, warned that the company’s financial situation was deteriorating and that its cash “won’t last much longer.” The airline is in the midst of its second bankruptcy in a year and is also dealing with rising jet fuel costs linked to conflicts in the Middle East.
Spirit, known for its low-cost models, has struggled over the years due to rising costs, changing consumer preferences and engine recalls. Its planned merger with JetBlue Airways was blocked by the Biden administration. The airline had expected to exit bankruptcy proceedings by mid-year, but a recent spike in fuel prices has made recovery more difficult.

According to CNBC, major U.S. carriers are currently preparing for the possibility that Spirit may shut down. United Airlines said it was “ready to support Spirit customers and employees” if operations were halted, while American Airlines said it had instituted fare caps on certain routes to help affected passengers.
“To help customers whose travel may be disrupted, we are immediately enacting a fare cap on economy class tickets on Spirit routes, we are also offering nonstop service and will continue to support as many customers as possible,” American Airlines said in a statement.
In the absence of a bailout and mounting financial pressure, Spirit is said to be preparing to liquidate its fleet and wind up operations, although the exact timeline is unclear.
