Kolkata/Keshyari: Mamata Banerjee on Saturday claimed that the EC’s SIR is a “big scam” aimed at “bringing the BJP to power in Bengal” and warned those who implement the SIR of a backlash.“Voters are being deleted indiscriminately. Remember, out of the 90 lakh voters deleted, 60 lakh are Hindus and 30 lakh are Muslims. One day, SIR is a huge scam. Those who are trying to please their bosses by torturing and harassing people will get justice,” she said at a rally at Keshiary in West Midnapore.
“More than 250 people died due to SIR exercise… Since we speak in Bengali, aren’t we Indian? Do we need to constantly prove our citizenship?” she asked. She pointed out during the SIR the alleged attacks on Lodha and Sabal communities. She accused the BJP of planning to tamper with EVMs and spread fear. “It is being said that those who are removed from the Bihar list will not get ration…their bank accounts will be frozen. I will not allow any such thing to happen in Bengal,” she said. – Dwaipayan Ghosh and Sujoy Khanra
