Sheriff Nanos says Nancy Guthrie investigation ‘nowhere near cold case’ in major update: ‘We have some DNA…’

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos Already said Nancy Guthrie This case is “far removed” from the cold case. “We have some DNA We think it’s still feasible. ” he said during a 45-minute interview on The Bill Buckmaster Show on KVOI AM 1030 with longtime Tucson host Bill Buckmaster and Arizona Daily Star columnist Tim Steller.

Speaking about the investigation, Nanos said the Sheriff’s Department is still working with the FBI, labs and forensic examiners across the country and “we still have thousands (hours) of video footage to sort through.”

“This case will get us there. We let the evidence show us the way, and that’s what we base everything on,” Nanos said. “Right now, it’s all speculation. We have nothing in front of us to prove ‘who did this and this is why’.”

Nanos further said the case was “unlike anything we’ve seen in Tucson in years.”

“I can’t share everything, but I will tell you this: We have some DNA that we think is still viable and we have to work on it,” the sheriff said. “We know the science, we know we have some labs in the country that are working hard to make this happen.”

Nanos said a breakthrough can happen at any time, but a “real breakthrough” is when “someone knows something, maybe somewhere, someone will say something.” He also explained that despite the amount of time and resources invested in the Guthrie investigation, it “absolutely will not” impact the department’s ability to respond to other crimes or public safety issues in Pima County.

The department initially sent hundreds of officers to search the area around Nancy’s home, following information and following leads. However, Nanos said the work has now been reduced to an investigative team of about 20 people.

“But we know that if something big needs to happen, we will immediately commit resources,” he added.

‘I’m glad they threw stones at me’

Nanos said he’s glad all the public criticism is directed at him and not his team.

“I’m glad they’re throwing rocks at me and not my team. Just do it, it’s okay,” Nanos said. “I tell them, ‘I’m going to be your bad guy, I’m going to be your villain.’ (The public) takes that literally. … Part of the problem is, in law enforcement, we know a lot more than you know, but there’s a reason for that. We know we have to get help from the media and the community to solve some crimes, but that doesn’t mean we’re just going to share the entire case with you.”

Nanos came under fire for attending a University of Arizona basketball game a week after Guthrie disappeared. Speaking on the matter, he explained that he got a ticket from his former dentist a few weeks ago and that he “just needed a break” due to family issues. He said his brother died shortly after Nancy disappeared.

“On February 2, I learned that my brother was in the hospital. I believe he passed away three days later and I just needed a break. I’m so sorry,” Nanos said.

Nanos also previously said the investigation was “continuously expanding.” “As far as leads, jobs and getting out there, I would say, yes, it’s growing,” the chief said.
