SC rejects PETA’s plea for Karnataka bull race

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a plea filed by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) challenging a Karnataka high court order that held that Kambala and bullfighting competitions in Karnataka cannot be restricted to the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi. The appellant sought to challenge this.A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta refused to interfere with the HC order and raised the question why bullfighting competitions should be restricted to certain areas. “They want to showcase the culture of different parts of the state; what’s the problem? Let people in other parts of the state also become familiar with the culture. Why limit it to only certain areas?” it said.It was argued that other places had no traditional or cultural links to the sport and that the events were held purely for commercial reasons, but this request was dismissed.
