SC: Packaged foods must carry warning labels on front of package | India News

New Delhi: Supreme Court The Center and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India were told on Tuesday to prioritize the health of citizens and not take advantage of multinational corporations. A court has called for the implementation of a “front-of-pack warning label” system on processed food packaging to ensure clear symbols on the front list the sugar, salt, saturated fat and calories contained in them.Justices JB Pardiwala and KV Viswanathan expressed their displeasure FosayThe response sought more time to conduct studies and said the courts would intervene if authorities failed to do so.“You should not be concerned about multinational corporations but about the right to health of the citizens of the country,” the judge said, giving three weeks to conduct a study. In April last year, the court directed an expert committee appointed by the Center to prepare recommendations and submit a report on changes in ingredient display rules. The Union government said it decided to amend the regulations after receiving 14,000 comments on the new rules, according to an affidavit filed by FSSAI. The court was hearing a PIL seeking directions from the Center and states to make front-of-pack warning labels mandatory for processed food products. The FSSAI in 2014 approved a proposal to display nutritional information, including total sugar, salt and saturated fat content, in bold and prominent font size on packaged food labels. “As well as empowering consumers to make healthier choices, the amendment will help combat the rise of non-communicable diseases and promote public health and well-being,” a government statement said.
