New Delhi: MPs quit Raghav Chadha Together with six other members, it significantly changed the composition of the upper house, strengthening the national development agenda led by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party while significantly reducing the influence of Aam Aadmi’s party. The move also dealt a blow to the opposition camp, which saw its membership reduced from 84 to 77 after the AAP split. After merging the breakaway AAP MPs, the BJP’s vote tally in the Union House rose from 106 to 113, further consolidating its position in the House. There are 245 members in the House of Lords. In comparison, the AAP’s membership has plummeted from 10 to just three.Chadha, along with Congress MPs Sandeep Pathak and Ashok Mittal, announced they were quitting the AAP and decided to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), triggering a wider schism in the party. Parliamentarians like Swati Maliwal, Harbhajan Singh, Rajinder Gupta and Vikram Sahney are also part of the group supporting the move.Chadha harshly criticized his former party when announcing the decision. “The ‘Aam Aadmi Party’ that I cultivated with my own blood and sweat and dedicated 15 years of my youth to it has now completely deviated from its principles, values and core morals. The party no longer works for the interests of the country or the nation, but for personal interests,” he said.He also said that the split was supported by the majority of AAP MPs in the Upper House. “We have decided that we, the two-thirds of the BJP in the Lok Sabha, will implement the provisions of the Constitution of India and merge with the BJP,” Chadha said.

NDA gains ground, BJP strengthens position

With the addition of seven MPs, the Bharatiya Janata Party has further consolidated its position in the House of Representatives, which has 113 MPs.The broader National Democratic Alliance (NDA) continues to maintain its dominance, with allies including the four-member Janata Dal and the five-member AIADMK.

AAP MPs reduced to just three

For the AAP, the split resulted in a sharp decline in its parliamentary strength. The party is now down to just three MPs: Sanjay Singh, ND Gupta and Balbir Singh Seechewal.Sanjay Singh remains the party’s most outspoken figure in Parliament and has been a strong critic of the defectors, accusing the BJP of orchestrating the split. He claimed central agencies were being used as part of a larger political strategy and branded outgoing MPs “traitors”.“Operation Lotus is being carried out against the Punjab government… ED and CBI are being used to carry out Operation Lotus… The people of Punjab will never forget these traitors,” he said.

Impact on opposition groups

This shift has also affected the opposition camp, of which AAP is a part. The group’s total number of members in the Bundestag has dropped to 77 from the previous 84 after seven MPs quit. The group is led by the Congress (29 members), followed by the Trinamool Congress (13) and DMK (8), as well as the Samajwadi Party (4), CPI(M) (3), RJD (3), J&K National Conference (3), CPI (2), Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (2), IUML (2), NCP (4) and AAP (3) name) and other political parties.

political turning point

These developments mark a major political turning point for the AAP, which has steadily built up its influence in the Rajya Sabha in recent years. The sudden loss of two-thirds of the members not only affected its numerical strength, but also raised questions about the cohesion within the party. For the BJP, these gains further strengthen its position in the upper house, giving it greater space to push its legislative agenda while reducing its reliance on external support.
