‘Proud moment’: PM Modi praises India for taking ‘decisive step’ in civil nuclear energy journey as Kalpakkam fast breeder reactor reaches criticality

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi India has taken a “decisive step” in its civilian nuclear energy journey after its prototype fast breeder reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam reached criticality, it said on Monday, marking a major milestone in the country’s nuclear energy programme.In X’s post, Prime Minister Modi The indigenously designed and built reactor represents progress in the second phase of India’s three-phase nuclear programme, and underscores the country’s long-term goal of utilizing its vast thorium reserves.“Today, India took a decisive step in its civilian nuclear energy journey, advancing the second phase of its nuclear programme,” Prime Minister Modi wrote.“The prototype fast breeder reactor designed and built indigenously by Kalpakkam has reached criticality,” he said.

Indian PM says reactor demonstrates India’s scientific and engineering prowess

The prime minister said the advanced reactor is capable of producing more fuel than it consumes, calling it a major technological achievement for India’s nuclear sector.“The ability of this advanced reactor to produce more fuel than it consumes reflects the depth of our scientific capabilities and the strength of our engineering enterprise,” Prime Minister Modi said. He added that the development was “a decisive step towards leveraging our vast thorium reserves during the third phase of the programme.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the achievement “a proud moment for India” and congratulated the scientists and engineers involved in the project.“This is a proud moment for India. Congratulations to our scientists and engineers,” he said in the post.The announcement marks a significant moment for India’s indigenous nuclear energy capabilities, with the Kalpakkam reactor expected to play an important role in strengthening the country’s strategic and civilian nuclear ambitions.
