Bangladesh Prime Minister Tariq Rehman on Wednesday condemned the atrocities committed by the Pakistani military during Operation Searchlight on March 25, 1971. Shortly after the results were announced, the Pakistani army arrested him and launched a massive campaign of violence against the Bengali-speaking population in the area.Bangladesh will celebrate its 56th Independence Day on Thursday. The country concluded elections earlier this year after a long period of violence and protests led to the overthrow of Sheikh Hasina’s government. Tarique Rahman’s BNP won February’s election in a landslide.
