Plane that travels through time: How a flight left Japan on Saturday and landed on Friday | World News

PC: national interest

The phenomenon of an airplane flying “before takeoff” is not an error in the space-time continuum; This often happens because transpacific flights cross the International Date Line (IDL) between Japan and California. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrationa flight from Japan to California, if flying east from Japan on Saturday and crossing the IDL from west to east, the plane will cross the 180-degree meridian and need to reset the calendar back to Friday. High-speed aircraft, specifically the SR-71 Blackbird, can exploit this geographical “loophole” and fly at speeds in excess of Mach 3.2, allowing pilots and passengers to outpace the Earth’s rotation and “save” a day while arriving at their destination the previous day.

180 Degree Meridian: How the Pacific Reset the Calendar

The “time travel” effect is caused by the International Date Line (IDL) at 180 degrees longitude in the Pacific Ocean. IDL is defined as National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Serves as an imaginary boundary that separates two consecutive calendar days. When a commercial airliner crosses the IDL heading east from Japan to California, it gets a full day of flying time. To stay in sync with the world calendar, the aircraft’s local calendar/clock system must be reset 24 hours back, resulting in two flights on the same date.

How about SR-71 blackbird in a hurry

Although all commercial airlines make this journey, the calendar day advance is recorded by legend and is the most extreme example of “time travel” SR-71 Blackbird airplane. The SR-71 can fly at speeds in excess of 2,100 mph (Mach 3.2), allowing it to travel faster than the Earth rotates once. NASA flight data shows that when the pilots departed Okinawa, Japan, for California on Saturday morning, they were able to complete the journey so quickly that they arrived at Beale Air Force Base before departure time on Friday afternoon; so, literally, that it eclipsed the sun on the horizon.

Time Paradoxes and Physical Time Travel

This is the difference between one type of time travel in science fiction (time travel paradoxes) and another type of time travel in physical science (theoretical physics). When someone travels far away in another time period, they have a calendar indicating the time shift; however, their body clock keeps running forward. As mentioned in a journal of theoretical physicsthis violation of time travel (like Einstein’s theory of relativity) is an artificial (human) convention for measuring time, and it is still a fascinating consequence of the 24-hour day required on a spherical Earth that rotates every 24 hours.
