British police have arrested nine suspects linked to a religious group in Crewe, Cheshire, in a major operation, accusing them of rape, sexual assault, forced marriage and modern slavery, the BBC reported.More than 500 police officers carried out coordinated early morning raids on three properties linked to the Ahmadi Religious Organization for Peace and Light (Arpol). The group was founded in the early 2000s by followers of Shia Islam and currently has about 150 members based in the town.Cheshire Police said they were alerted last month about the allegations, which reportedly date back to 2023. The investigation focuses on crimes involving a woman who was a member of the group at the time.A police spokesman said the investigation was focused on individuals, adding “it has nothing to do with religion per se.”Those arrested included six men and three women of various nationalities, including the United States, Mexico, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. They face a range of charges including human trafficking, rape, sexual assault, forced marriage and modern slavery offences.Among them, a 35-year-old Spanish man was arrested on suspicion of rape, sexual assault, beating and forced marriage, while a 30-year-old Mexican man was detained on suspicion of human trafficking, sexual assault and forced marriage. Others include individuals suspected of modern slavery and sexual assault offences.Separately, 13 people were arrested on suspicion of disturbing public order, which police said was unrelated to the main investigation. The raid took place shortly before 09:00 BST and reported a heavy police presence in parts of Crewe. Emergency services were present near King George V Stadium and roads around Victoria Avenue and near Queen’s Park were temporarily closed.Searches were carried out at a number of locations, including Webb House and properties along Nantwich Road. Police said they were working with local authorities to provide support to residents and ensure safety measures were in place.A spokesman for Cheshire East Council said: “Our priority is ensuring those displaced are safe and supported.”The operation was supported by Europol and assisted by officials from Ireland and Sweden.
