mayor of new york Zoran MamdaniAn appeal to people across the city to help shovel snow was met with ridicule. As New York City struggles, this Democrat addresses people blizzard warning. Mamdani’s call was met with backlash because identification (ID) was apparently required to register and help clear snow.
In the video shared online, Mamdani can be heard saying: “For those of you who want to do more for your neighbors or make extra cash, you can also become an emergency snowplow.” He asked New Yorkers to show their “documents,” leading many to express their outrage online.
According to the New York City Department of Health, a person will need two small photos measuring 1-1.5 inches square, two original and photocopies of ID, and a Social Security card.
“After weeks of snow and trash piling up on the streets, Mamdani is now imploring New Yorkers to sign up to shovel. He’s asking people to sign up online, which requires ID,” noted a right-leaning page on X .
“You can shovel snow with an ID, but you can vote without an ID. You can’t make this up,” it added.
Another right-leaning page wrote “Zohran Mamdani is now imploring New Yorkers to sign up to shovel before tomorrow’s blizzard, following his disastrous response to the last blizzard, which resulted in nine- and ten-foot ice piles blocking roads for weeks. Oh, and you’ll need to bring ID to sign up.”
Someone else joked: “Mamdani carried out bold snow shoveling before the historic snowstorm!”.
Complaints come from Democratic backlash against president Donald TrumpPush to make voter ID mandatory through the SAVE Act. While the federal government believes this will increase transparency, state governments have expressed concern about increased federal interference.
While the debate surrounding Mamdani’s comments continues, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has declared a state of emergency across the state. “This is an issue that needs to be taken seriously. A snowstorm can literally paralyze an entire region,” she warned.
A blizzard warning is in effect for Long Island, New York City, Westchester County and the Hudson Valley from 1 p.m. Sunday to 6 p.m. Monday.
Widespread coastal flooding is possible Sunday night into Monday morning, particularly in parts of Jamaica Bay, Staten Island, the Battery, and the Bronx and northern Queens. Coney Island, Massapequa, Sevier, Westhampton and Montauk also could be hit, according to the National Weather Service.
