New Delhi: The Diamond League athletics meet in Doha has been postponed for six weeks due to ongoing conflict in the Middle East, with organizers prioritizing safety amid regional tensions. The event, originally scheduled for May 8, will now be held on June 19. The decision comes amid the announcement of a temporary ceasefire between the United States and Iran, reflecting ongoing uncertainty in the region.Doha holds special significance for Indian fans because last year’s event Neeraj Chopra An important milestone was achieved.
The Tokyo Olympic champion broke the 90m mark for the first time with a time of 90.23m, but ultimately finished behind Germany’s Julian Weber. His performance was widely regarded as a landmark moment for Indian athletics.
Organizers made it clear that the postponement was due to concerns for the safety of athletes, officials and spectators.According to AFP, they said in a statement: “For the safety of athletes and spectators, it has been decided to postpone the meeting. If conditions permit, the meeting will be held on June 19.”In addition to the date change, the venue has also been moved from Qatar Sports Club to Khalifa International Stadium. The move is aimed at dealing with extreme weather conditions as the stadium is equipped with temperature control technology and has previously hosted major global events such as the World Athletics Championships and the FIFA World Cup.
This disruption is not limited to athletics. The ongoing conflict has forced the cancellation or postponement of several high-profile sporting events in the region. Formula 1 races in Bahrain and Jeddah were cancelled, while other competitions including the football final and the MotoGP and gymnastics events in Qatar were also affected.Still, some events went ahead as planned, including a high-profile horse race in Dubai. Meanwhile, the Diamond League season will kick off in Shanghai on May 16, with organizers adjusting the schedule to cope with the uncertain situation.
