New Delhi: Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kieron Rijiju The Center on Friday defended its decision to keep the Henderson Brooks-Bhagat report on the 1962 Sino-Indian war secret as a political row broke out in Parliament over the leadership of the Opposition. Rahul Gandhi Quotes from “unpublished memoirs” of former Army Chief MM Naravane were prohibited. In a post on X, Rijiju described the report as a sensitive defense document and said it should not be used for political purposes. He wrote, “Our government is led by a mature leader. The Henderson Brooks-Bhagat Commission report has remained secret since 1962. It blamed the Nehru government for a disastrous defeat at the hands of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army. Our government has never declassified it as a defense issue that cannot be used as a political tool.”According to ANI, the Henderson Brooks-Bhagat Report was prepared by Lieutenant General Henderson Brooks and Brigadier General Premendra Singh Bhagat and was commissioned by the then Acting Chief of Army Staff JN Chaudhuri to review the Indian Army’s actions during the 1962 war with China. The report remains confidential.Rijiju also retweeted a post from 2024 in which he highlighted the development of infrastructure along India’s borders. A row broke out after Rahul Gandhi tried to quote former Army Chief Naravane’s “unpublished memoirs” while moving a motion of thanks in the Lok Sabha on the President’s address. The Congress leader quoted from the memoir in reference to the 2020 military standoff between China and India in eastern Ladakh, a move that was strongly opposed by members of the Bharatiya Janata Party. In his speech, Gandhi accused Prime Minister Modi of “failing to fulfill his responsibilities” in the 2020 conflict along the Line of Actual Control.Gandhi continued to raise the issue of the India-China confrontation in August 2020, but was interrupted several times by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and later by Home Minister Amit Shah, who asked him not to cite any unverified sources. General Naravane was the Army Chief at the time of the Ladakh standoff. Excerpts quoted by Gandhi were recently published by an online portal.
