Nancy Guthrie case: Sheriff Chris Nanos faces new charges for carrying loaded, undeclared firearm through TSA checkpoint

According to Fox News Digital, an incident report showed that in November 2024, Nanos allegedly carried a loaded, undeclared handgun through a TSA checkpoint at Tucson International Airport.

Fox News Digital reports that it obtained a report of the incident that occurred in Concourse B of Tucson International Airport on November 6, 2024, which shows that a TSA X-ray technician allegedly discovered a loaded handgun inside the sergeant’s carry-on bag and alerted an officer. Airport police later found five rounds of ammunition in the gun’s magazine and one bullet in the chamber.

Nanos reportedly did not declare his firearm when he passed through the checkpoint. This violates TSA regulations for regular passengers.

Nanos was not charged criminally but was asked to secure the weapon before continuing on his journey. He missed his original flight and later boarded another flight after putting the gun back in the car.

Nanos recently said the Guthrie case was “nowhere near a cold case.” “We have some DNA We think it’s still feasible. ” he said during a 45-minute interview on The Bill Buckmaster Show on KVOI AM 1030 with longtime Tucson host Bill Buckmaster and Arizona Daily Star columnist Tim Steller.

Speaking about the investigation, Nanos said the Sheriff’s Department is still working with the FBI, labs and forensic examiners across the country and “we still have thousands (hours) of video footage to sort through.”

“This case will get us there. We let the evidence show us the way, and that’s what we base everything on,” Nanos said. “Right now, it’s all speculation. We have nothing in front of us to prove ‘who did this and this is why’.”

Nanos also previously said the investigation was “continuously expanding.” “As far as leads, jobs and getting out there, I would say, yes, it’s growing,” the chief said.
