‘Moral cowardice’: As Middle East war enters third week, Congress lashes out at Centre, asks PM Modi four questions

New Delhi: Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Saturday criticized the Center, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of “moral cowardice and political betrayal” as the US-Israel conflict with Iran enters its third week.In a post on X, Ramesh emphasized that it has been more than three weeks since the air strikes against Iran began and 23 days since the Prime Minister visited Israel. He claimed that the government had remained silent and had not taken any substantive diplomatic steps to ease tensions.Ramesh wrote on Congressional leaders then raised four questions:

  1. Does the Modi government condemn, criticize or denounce the unabated campaign of targeted assassinations of senior Iranian leaders by the United States and Israel?
  2. Does the Modi government condemn, criticize or condemn the barbaric actions of the United States and Israel to force regime change and national collapse that could lead to civil war in Iran?
  3. Has the Modi government made serious diplomatic efforts and initiatives to immediately stop the bombing of Iran and Iran’s attacks on energy and other critical infrastructure in the Gulf countries?
  4. Is the Prime Minister using his professed friendship with the President of the United States and the Prime Minister of Israel to achieve a ceasefire?

He answered “no” to all four questions and further wrote in the post, “These four do not reflect the moral cowardice and political betrayal of Indian civilizational values.”His remarks came as the United States was stepping up its military strikes against Iran. On Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump said Washington was getting closer to its goals and could end its campaign soon. Meanwhile, U.S. Central Command reported that Operation Epic Fury caused significant damage to Iranian military assets, including attacks on drone production facilities and naval infrastructure. Pentagon officials said thousands of targets were hit in recent operations, signaling an increase in U.S. military operations in the region.
