NEW DELHI: India along with nearly 140 member states on Thursday backed a United Nations Security Council resolution condemning Iran’s attacks on Middle Eastern countries, which continued after a joint US-Israeli operation in Tehran. The 15-member Security Council adopted resolution 2817 (2026) with 13 votes in favor, with China and Russia abstaining. The resolution condemned Iran’s attacks on Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan. It also criticized attacks on “residential areas and civilian objects” and demanded an immediate end.The text further demands that Tehran cease “threats, provocations and actions aimed at disrupting maritime trade” and support for proxy groups. The representative of Iran refused to accept the adopted resolution, saying it was “clearly unfair to our country” and “severely damaged the credibility of the Security Council.”Bahrain’s representative welcomed the move, saying “the message is clear” and that “the international community firmly rejects these unjust and hostile actions by Iran”.Israel welcomed the condemnation and said: “Targeting civilians is wrong, targeting cities is wrong, and Iran must stop.”China, which abstained from the vote, said the resolution “did not reflect the root causes of the conflict and the overall situation in a comprehensive and balanced manner”. After the vote, the council also rejected another draft resolution proposed by Russia that called for a de-escalation of tensions without naming any country. It received only four votes in favor.
