Mexico’s Teotihuacan pyramid shootings: Shocking Columbine links emerge, first details on suspects

Video of the pyramid shooting has circulated online, showing a man standing on top of the pyramid with a gun as people duck for cover. Gunshots can also be heard in the shared video.

Mexican TV news anchor Azucena Uresti said a hunting weapon, a knife, cartridges and material related to the former Soviet Union were found on the gunman. Uresti additional “This would be a Mexican with an address in Mexico City, as stated on the INE voucher found on him.”

According to Uresti, who works for Milenio Television and Radio Fórmula, the shooting suspect was also allegedly wearing a “National Selection” type T-shirt.

“This piece of clothing ties into the ‘true crime’ aesthetic. It references a T-shirt worn by Eric Harris in 1999. The event occurred on April 20, the same day as the Columbine massacre,” she noted. The shirt worn by the Mexican gunman was reportedly a reference to the shirt Harris wore during the 1999 Columbine High School shooting. The two incidents also occurred on April 20, several years apart.

The Columbine school shooting had long been the worst K-12 school mass shooting in U.S. history until the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in December 2012. Meanwhile, Canada’s current Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand commented that “one Canadian was killed and another injured in Teotihuacan due to a horrific act of gun violence” and that her “thoughts are with their families and loved ones.”
