Mamata ‘goodbye’ – Nerjee: BJP’s tide takes Bengal’s big fish out of water

NEW DELHI: Bengal’s big fish is stranded, with the rising tide of the BJP stranding Mamata ‘Didi’. The saffron wave has not only arrived, it has swept across West Bengal with ferocity, shattering what once seemed an unshakable bastion. The state, long a Didi bastion, had given the BJP a staggering 207 seats, easily breaching the majority and finally turning the tables. Amit ShahBangladesh’s once far-fetched call for “200 paar” has become a reality. From the earliest imprint of the Congress Party era to decades of left-wing rule, Mamata BanerjeeIn the 15 years of rule, the political tone of Bengal has undergone a huge transformation. Red gave way to green and now, no doubt, to saffron. This is not just an election result; This is a full-blown political upheaval.

Mamata Banerjee loses her ‘safe seat’ Bhabanipur, Suvendu Adhikari wins by over 15,000 votes

as prime minister Narendra Modi The Bharatiya Janata Party headquarters announced, “Banglay poribortan hoye gechhe,” Bengal has indeed changed. The prime minister wore a traditional scarf, marking the party’s first national conquest, both symbolically and substantively. The Trinamool Congress was reduced to double digits, a collapse that few seriously expected. In a political irony, Mamata Banerjee herself suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of her former protégé and now rival Suvendu Adhikari in Babanipur. If Nandigram in 2021 was the first crack, Bhabanipur in 2026 became the echo, louder, sharper and more far-reaching.Didi’s fortress didn’t fall overnight; it eroded under the weight of two sharp forces. One is the fatigue of 15 years, and the other is the anti-incumbency that quietly gathers strength and then breaks out decisively. The other was the Election Commission’s “Special Intensive Revision” (SIR), a controversial but far-reaching move that slashed the electoral roll by 12%, a figure that was enough to change the electoral landscape in favor of the rise of the BJP.This time, Prime Minister Modi not only tasted ‘jhalmuri’ in Jhalgram but also tasted victory in Bengal.

Bangladesh: The last frontier finally falls

The saffron party has risen steadily since 2014, first as the main challenger to the United Progressive Alliance under Narendra Modi, leaving the last unconquered frontier. Bengal, with its multi-layered political memory and strong regional identity, becomes the final test for the BJP towards a truly pan-India footprint. On May 4, this frontier was not only captured but also opened the door to the throne of Calcutta.

The Trinamool Congress has taken up positions in some places. The bleeding has slowed down in parts of South 24 Parganas, East Burdwan and Howrah. But on the larger map, the tides are unmistakable. From the northern districts, where the BJP is almost completely dominant, to the southern districts of Jhargram, Purulia and East Midnapore, where the ruling party has been wiped out, the message is straightforward. The Bharatiya Janata Party defeated the Mamata-led Trinamool Congress, crossing the 200-seat mark and significantly expanding its vote share to 45.84%, while the Didi camp trailed with 40.80%.Even the margins tell their own story: Madijala-Naxalbari gave the BJP a 140,000-vote lead, underscoring the scale of the anti-incumbency wave.

The city’s transformation determines the verdict

What really tipped the balance, however, was the quiet movement in Bangladesh’s cities and suburbs. Kolkata and its fringes, the industrial belt stretching from South 24 Parganas in the south to Howrah and North 24 Parganas, underwent a decisive transformation. This used to be the Trinamool’s comfort zone. This time, it has become a losing battleground. The cracks in the numbers are obvious. In 2021, the Trinamool occupied 123 of the 142 seats in Kolkata, 24 North and South Parganas, Nadia, Howrah, Hooghly and East Burdwan. In 2026, this number has shrunk to just 48.Kolkata itself also witnessed the loss of key seats: Rash Behari, Jadavpur, Shyampukur, Jorasanko, Maniktala, while the party lost key seats in North 24 Parganas including Barrackpore, Bidhannagar, Dum Dum and Panihati. Howrah has also slipped down the rankings, with high-profile wins such as Rudranil Ghosh’s adding to the BJP’s momentum. The capital and urban areas have largely aligned themselves with the BJP, pushing Didi to the brink of collapse.

Didi Chuxing: The performance of the “only candidate” is mediocre

Throughout the campaign, Mamata Banerjee relied heavily on her 2021 playbook, projecting herself as the “only candidate” for all 294 seats. But this time, the strategy faltered. Coercive rhetoric is difficult to connect to a reality shaped by fatigue, resentment, and changing aspirations. The gap between information and emotion becomes too large to bridge.

The setback was nothing less than a political earthquake for Mamata, who has built deep grassroots influence across Bengal. The anti-incumbency movement swept through rural and urban areas, eroding the Trinamool’s base.Voters spoke of burnout, their growing perception of governance as a tyranny and a desire for structural change.

‘Poribartan hoye gechhe’

“Banglay poribortan hoye gechhe (West Bengal has changed),” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, wearing the traditional Bengal attire dhoti-kurta, said in a victory speech at the Bharatiya Janata Party headquarters on Monday, hailing the party’s first victory in West Bengal as a new dawn for Bengal.“This is a declaration of a bright future for the country,” he said, as the BJP notched a hat-trick in Assam and was re-elected with a resounding victory in Puducherry along with its ally the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. He called on all political parties in Bengal to resolve to end the endless cycle of poll violence. “Badla nahi badlav ki baat honi chahiye (We should not talk about revenge but change),” he said.At the BJP headquarters, the Prime Minister also recalled his statement after his victory in Bihar that as the Ganga flows eastward, so will the BJP’s march, adding that the party now rules every state along the river from Gangotri to Ganga Sagar.“In Bengal, women will now find a safe environment and youth will find employment opportunities,” he said, announcing that the new government would adopt the Centre’s Ayushman Bharat scheme in the first cabinet meeting. He also pledged tough action against infiltrators, reinforcing a key campaign platform.

SIR: The numbers behind the narrative

Beyond the words, the numbers tell a multi-layered story. The Electoral Commission’s “Special Intensification Revision” (SIR) of the electoral roll, which resulted in the deletion of nearly 9.1 million names, emerged as a key factor.

In 169 constituencies where more than 25,000 voters were removed, the BJP’s vote share surged from 41 in 2021 to around 100 in 2026, while the Trinamool’s dominance shrank. Even in seats with fewer deletions, the rise of the BJP was evident, with its numbers more than tripling. At the same time, there has been a weak resurgence in opposition forces. The Congress won two seats in Malda, the Left Front got one in Murshidabad and the ISF retained Bangal, making the palette of parliament more diverse than in 2021’s binary contest.

Shift in voter sentiment

From welfare security to job creation, from law and order narrative to identity politics, the BJP has orchestrated a lobby that cuts across all strata, while the Trinamool’s once reliable social alliance is showing signs of strain. There has also been a clear change in mindset. Over the years, many voters have drawn a distinction between Didi’s personal image and the behavior of party cadres. By 2026, the distinction has blurred. The disconnect between leadership intentions and grassroots experience is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore, forcing some voters to look to the alternative.

Even before the formal campaign begins, signs of change can be seen in moments of political confrontation that hint at a shift in the balance of power. The momentum had clearly shifted when Prime Minister Modi reinforced his message with the slogan “chun-chun ke hisab liya jayega”.

What’s next for Bangladesh?

Now, with victory assured, the focus turns to government formation. Prime Minister Modi is expected to hold a key meeting with Amit Shah and the BJP leadership in New Delhi to finalize the chief minister and cabinet picks. The party’s “collective leadership” strategy during the election campaign left options open, focusing on leaders with roots in Bengal.

What do you think is the biggest reason for the strong performance of the BJP in Bengal?

Names across generations, seasoned figures and emerging faces are in contention as the BJP strikes a balance between experience, representation and internal dynamics. The input of central observers and state leaders will influence the final decision and the possibility of a deputy chief minister is also being considered. For the BJP, this is not just a victory but the culmination of a long pursuit. For Bangladesh, this marks another dramatic turn in a political journey that has never been short of upheaval. When saffron falls on party offices and celebrations give way to governance, the real test begins: translating a historic mission into a lasting new order.
