Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Board of Education Appoints Superintendent Alberto Carvalho Most recent paid administrative leave FBI raid In his home and office.
The decision was made during a closed board meeting on Friday, Fox 11 Los Angeles reported. The leave is effective immediately.
The Los Angeles Unified School District said in a statement that the move is intended to keep the district’s priorities on track.
“The board took action to ensure that the district’s leadership remains focused on its mission of providing world-class teaching and learning in the classroom. While we understand the need for information, we are unable to discuss the specific details of this matter during the investigation,” the district said.
On Wednesday morning local time, federal agents simultaneously conducted searches at Carvalho’s San Pedro home and his office in the Los Angeles Unified School District’s downtown area. Los Angeles Headquarters.
A third location in a southwest Florida ranch was also raided, according to the FBI’s Miami field office. At this location, Carvalho served as superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office confirmed that a “judicially approved search warrant” had been served, but court documents supporting the search remain sealed.
Authorities have not yet publicly detailed the contents of the investigation.
FOX 11 cited sources as saying the investigation may be related to a 2024 contract involving an artificial intelligence chatbot project. In 2023, Carvalho announced a $3 million deal with AllHere, the company behind a chatbot called “Ed.” After the company closed, the tool was never fully rolled out in classrooms. Its founder, Joanna Smith Griffin, has since been charged by federal authorities with fraud and identity theft.
The Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Trustees will decide Carvalho’s future based on the results of the investigation. He may be reinstated or fired.
His contract was renewed in September 2025, with about four years remaining on the deal.
Meanwhile, Andres Chait, director of school operations for the Los Angeles Unified School District, has been named acting superintendent. Carvalho has led the nation’s second-largest school district since 2022 and was reappointed in 2025.
