Located on the scenic escarpment of the Great Rift Valley, Naivasha has grown from a beautiful lakeside destination to become one of Africa’s leaders in renewable energy production. By harnessing geothermal energy generated by the power of volcanoes beneath Hell’s Gate National Park, Naivasha is now a major pillar of Kenya’s energy security, generating nearly half of the country’s total electricity generation. This new energy source from the earth is a reliable, sustainable and clean energy that can promote the sustainable development of industry and environmental protection. Today, Naivasha has become a model for other countries to follow, as it can power industrial activities without adversely affecting surrounding wildlife and support one of the country’s leading flower industries, while protecting the national grid from the effects of climate change.
Naivasha’s emergence as the geothermal capital of the world today began with the completion of the Olkaria 1 power plant in 1981; as a result, Kenya was the first African country to harness volcanic geothermal steam. According to research published by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Naivasha lies on a major tectonic plate boundary and has the advantage of a thin continental crust and high temperature gradients; as a result, magma in the area heats underground aquifers to more than 300 degrees Celsius. This unique geographical location therefore enables Naivasha to produce approximately 900 megawatts (MW) of energy from the Olkaria geothermal complex, accounting for approximately 47% of Kenya’s total electricity consumption. The availability of geothermal energy (compared to solar or wind energy) is approximately 95%, thus making Naivasha the most reliable energy center for power generation in East Africa.
The success of Naivasha geothermal can also be seen in “direct use” applications outside the grid. Naivasha, for example, is the center of Kenya’s multi-billion shilling flower industry. According to a report published by the United Nations titled “Sustainable Geothermal Power Generation and Heating of Greenhouses and Hot Springs in the Rift Valley of Kenya,” geothermal steam is used to heat large greenhouses at controlled ambient temperatures, allowing year-round rose production and eliminating a large number of fungal diseases due to the ability to use cheaper energy sources such as fossil fuels. In addition, Naivasha is home to a 1,000-acre Special Economic Zone (SEZ) where manufacturers can take advantage of subsidized geothermal energy at prices well below current market costs; for example, they can manufacture goods for approximately 7 cents ($0.07), compared to the current market price of approximately 0.18 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh).
One of the main distinguishing features of Naivasha’s geothermal feature is its location within Hell’s Gate National Park, according to UNESCO. This requires advanced engineering techniques that limit environmental impact. Thanks to the use of thin pipes and quiet turbines, large mammals such as giraffes and buffalo can roam freely within the electricity production infrastructure. In addition, mineral-rich brine produced as a by-product of steam production is used to fill the Olkaria geothermal springs, Africa’s largest natural health spa, significantly increasing ecotourism revenue in the surrounding area.
In terms of technological achievements, Naivasha’s contribution to Kenya’s geothermal energy production from 2024 to 2026 ranks sixth in the world. The Kenyan government has set an ambitious goal to add 5,000 megawatts (MW) of power generation capacity in Naivasha under its Vision 2030 plan, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. As a result, the Geothermal Development Company (GDC), a state-owned company that reduces drilling risks for private investors, will help make Naivasha a key driver of Kenya’s goal of a 100% renewable grid.
