former first lady Jill Biden New claims have been made about the moments following President Joe Biden’s decision to drop out of the 2024 presidential race, including an allusion to the then-Vice President’s account Kamala Harris Urging immediate approval.
The details are included in Jill Biden’s upcoming memoir, “An East Wing View,” excerpts of which were reported by the New York Post and USA Today.
According to Jill Biden’s account, the conversation took place on July 21, 2024, when Joe Biden informed Harris that he would not seek re-election.
Harris reacted with surprise and urgency when she heard the decision, she wrote. “Oh my gosh, Joe. Are you sure?” Harris said, according to excerpts.
Jill Biden further claimed that when Joe Biden suggested waiting until the next morning to announce a formal endorsement, Harris urged action to be expedited.
Harris allegedly responded: “I want it sooner.”

The memoir also noted that when Biden said he would respond later, Harris reiterated the timing, asking: “Can you do it as quickly as possible? Like, within 20 minutes?”
According to Jill Biden, the exchange became so difficult that she eventually left the room.
Joe Biden Kamala Harris finally offered her support in another statement about 30 minutes after announcing her decision to drop out of the 2024 presidential race.
The move helps solidify Harris’ support and avoids a potentially contentious Democratic electoral process ahead of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
After Biden withdrew, Harris quickly became the leading Democratic figure in the 2024 election cycle.

The memoir also looks back at the tense relationship between Jill Biden and Kamala Harris since the 2020 Democratic primary. The New York Post reported that Jill Biden brought up Harris’ past criticism of Joe Biden during a 2019 debate, when Harris questioned his record on desegregating school buses.
At the time, Jill Biden publicly defended her husband in a call with supporters and expressed intense dismay at the attack.
The excerpt also showed that Jill Biden had privately questioned Harris’ selection as Biden’s running mate, pointing to earlier conflicts during the primary.
As of publication, the White House and Kamala Harris’ team have not publicly responded to the specific claims contained in excerpts from the memoir.
