According to law enforcement, the incident happened near Cedar and Polk streets around 5:40 p.m. According to Fox KTVU, a fight broke out between police and two suspects. Police said in an official statement that the incident was a confrontation involving two unidentified males and that police were requesting backup.
Meanwhile, Mission Local shared images of the altercation, which showed a man on the ground in handcuffs and surrounded by SFPD officers. They reported that the mayor’s vehicle was blocked by three people, prompting the mayor to request that they be removed. One man initially complied, but then clashed with a member of the mayor’s security team, who was injured and bleeding.
Authorities said the two officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were evaluated by paramedics at the scene, Mission Local reported.
The president of the San Francisco Police Association confirmed that Lurie was not injured in the “violent incident.”
Officials gave no clear explanation for the cause of the clashes. It is unclear whether the suspect made any threats against the mayor. Police further said that two suspects have been detained. Their identities have not been disclosed.
