A White House correspondent for The New York Times described a “riot” that broke out at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night on his publication’s live blog.
According to the original version of his post, Alexis Wilkins was “hiding in a room with another man who was holding her hand.” He described a “hand-holding” incident in which the country singer’s boyfriend, Patel, “dragged two men through the hallways” during the rescue at WHCD.
In an interview with the Daily Mail published on Wednesday, Wilkins called the Times’ reporting “obscene” and criticized the Times for its “bizarre refusal to fully admit its mistakes.”
She said: “I have only shaken Cash’s hand; any suggestion otherwise is false. It is sick of The New York Times to use this as a political tool in the wake of what is believed to be an active shooter incident. They will stop at nothing to push a narrative that is harmful to people they think they don’t like.”
She added, “You knew exactly what you were implying when you said someone was holding someone else’s hand in the other room. They were competent enough to know that.”
She also clarified that she “never held anyone’s hand” and that she and Patel were not in different holding cells. “The really interesting thing about all this is that it didn’t happen at all,” she said.
“I have never been in a holding cell other than the one I was in with Cash. I sat with the acting attorney general and his wife, Christine, and never held anyone’s hand,” she added.

The outlet claimed that New York Times reporters who attended the correspondents’ dinner appropriately reported on the night’s breaking news events, such as Wilkins hiding in a room while holding a security guard’s hand.
The New York Times, which originally published the report, later added context but stood by its reporting.
They changed their report to say Wilkins was shaking hands with someone who “appeared to be security.”
