New Delhi: Iran’s ambassador to India Mohammad Fatali told The Times of India on Saturday that the war against Iran is an “illegal attack based on ‘illusions'” as the conflict in West Asia disrupts the narrative and navigation. Notably, he said Tehran would continue to cooperate with New Delhi, including ensuring the safe passage of Indian ships through the Strait of Hormuz. He praised India’s stance, saying it “reflects India’s understanding of the complexities of the region”.“Currently, the strait is closed only to countries at war with Iran. In times of war, we will naturally not allow our enemies to pass through our internal waters,” the envoy said. The reason other boats are not sailing is that the area is unsafe and insurance is extremely expensive. “Special measures have been taken to ensure safe passage of ships from friendly countries, including India, he added. These are all handled based on real-time conditions and specific circumstances. At the same time, he made it clear that entry from countries “directly or indirectly involved in the aggression” against Iran is restricted.Iran’s ambassador said Tehran remained “committed to freedom of navigation and maritime security” but added: “Freedom of navigation is impossible without full respect for coastal states”. Regarding the destruction, insecurity and heightened risks, he said “responsibility lies squarely with the US and Israeli regimes” and considered their actions “a direct violation of the United Nations Charter”.
