Iran: Negotiations failed to reach agreement due to “excessive demands” from the United States

ISLAMABAD: Talks between Iran and the United States in Pakistan failed to reach an agreement due to “excessive demands” from the American side, a senior Iranian official said on Sunday.

However, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baqaei said that Iran is determined to use all tools, including diplomacy, to ensure national interests and national well-being.

Vice President Vance, head of the U.S. delegation, said the negotiations failed to reach a peace agreement, pointing out that Tehran’s failure to give up its nuclear program was one of the key sticking points. He said that the United States made the “final and best proposal” to Iran, but Iran did not accept it.

Bakayi said that the two sides have reached consensus on some issues, but have different views on two to three important issues.

He said a lot of information and texts were exchanged between the two sides during intense negotiations that began on Saturday morning and were mediated by Pakistan.

“In the past 24 hours, the two sides have discussed various aspects of the main negotiation topics, including the Strait of Hormuz, the nuclear issue, war reparations, the lifting of sanctions and a complete end to the war against Iran and the region,” Bakaj said.

He added: “The success of this diplomatic process depends on the seriousness and sincerity of the other party, not making excessive and illegal demands, and accepting Iran’s legitimate rights and interests.”

He said it was only natural that Iran should not expect to reach an agreement within one meeting from the beginning. “No one expected this.”

“We have not and will not forget America’s experience of broken promises and malicious behavior,” he said.

He thanked Pakistan for hosting the negotiations and for its efforts in advancing the process.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said in a brief statement to the media that Pakistan had helped mediate multiple rounds of “intense and constructive” discussions in the past 24 hours.

Expressing hope for progress, Dar said both sides should maintain a positive spirit and achieve lasting peace and regional stability.

Dar said Pakistan would continue to play a role in promoting contacts and dialogue between Iran and the United States in the coming days.

An Iranian delegation led by Speaker Mohammad Baqir Ghalibaf arrived in Islamabad on Friday evening, while a US delegation led by Vice President Vance arrived on Saturday morning.

This is the first direct, high-level contact between Iran and the United States since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
