The 2026 edition of the Indian Premier League featured intense cricket and a gripping post-season, but it was also marred by a series of disciplinary issues, with several players and officials sanctioned for breaches of the code of conduct. With 46 out of 70 league games completed and Kings XI Punjab topping the table with 13 points from 9 games, the focus is not just on performance but also on conduct on and off the field. So far, eight players and staff have received penalties ranging from fines to point deductions for various infractions.Increasing violationsThe disciplinary roll started early in the game (Tune 6) when Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Abhishek Sharma was fined 25% of his match fee for using audible obscenity during a match against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens.Rajasthan Royals head coach Ravinder Singh Bhinder’s off-field behavior has also come under scrutiny after he was caught using his mobile phone in the dugout during a match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (Match 16), violating strict IPL protocols and was fined Rs 1 lakh.In the 18th match, Nitish Rana, representing Delhi Capitals, was penalized for an argument with the fourth umpire over Tristan Stubbs’ request to change gloves, resulting in a fine and points deduction.Likewise, Royal Challengers Bangalore’s Tim David was fined for briefly refusing to hand the ball back to the umpire during the match against Mumbai Indians (20th over), an act deemed to be against the official’s instructions.Aggression and emotional outbursts on the fieldThe celebrations and reactions on the field also crossed the line multiple times. Rajasthan Royals pacer Nandre Burger was fined (32nd over) after his enthusiastic celebration of Rishabh Pant’s dismissal was deemed provocative.Young Kolkata Knight Riders batsman Angkrish Raghuvanshi was punished – bat-slamming and helmet-throwing – for venting his frustration after sparking controversy when he was dismissed (in the 38th over) for obstructing the pitch.Perhaps the most high-profile incident involved Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag, who was fined for using an e-cigarette in the dressing room, an act that violated Indian law and brought the game into disrepute during the 40th match against Kings XI Punjab.Delhi Capitals’ Kyle Jamieson was warned and deducted for an aggressive send-off of youngster Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the 43rd over against Rajasthan Royals.Captain under scanner for slow overageBeyond individual incidents, the high level of violations adds another layer of concern. Kings XI Punjab captain Shreyas Iyer was fined twice, while Shubman Gill (Gujarat Titans), Ruturaj Gaikwad (Chennai Super Kings), Hardik Pandya (Mumbai Indians) and Ajinkya Rahane (Kolkata Knight Riders) were also punished.
