Indian national Jashanpreet Singh arrested by ICE in San Diego on suspicion of criminal history, may face deportation

An Indian citizen named Jashanpreet Singh was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials in San Diego, with authorities calling him a “criminal alien.”The San Diego Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Office announced the arrest in a post on X. According to officials, Singer has a criminal record that includes threats with intent to intimidate, assault with a deadly weapon and driving under the influence (DUI).Authorities said Singer will remain in ICE custody while deportation proceedings are ongoing. These procedures determine whether a noncitizen will be removed from the United States. Officials did not immediately release further details about the circumstances of his arrest or when an immigration court hearing would be held. This development occurred while another Indian national named Jashanpreet Singh was in the United States. Last year, a 21-year-old Indian truck driver with the same name was involved in a fatal car accident in California, killing three people. In that case, Singer was initially charged with driving under the influence after a crash on a California highway. However, a toxicology report later cleared his charges. In a press release reported by CBS News, the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office said: “The toxicology report confirmed that none of the tested substances were present in the defendant’s blood at the time of the testing.”Singh’s family in India insists he is a baptized (Amritdhaari) Sikh who does not drink or take drugs. The driver pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.Based on the toxicology results, the DUI charge was dropped and the case continued on amended charges. Prosecutors listed three counts of gross negligence vehicular manslaughter and one count of reckless driving on a highway causing specified injury.Officials said the accident occurred when Singh failed to stop his truck and then hit another vehicle, causing a chain-reaction collision.
