IIT Madras opens center in California to become launch pad for deep tech startups in India

The center’s April 24 launch in Menlo Park, Calif., was announced Tuesday at the SelectUSA Investment Summit in National Harbor, Md.

Thirumalai Madhavnarayan, CEO of IIT Madras Global Research Foundation, told PTI: “The Menlo Park center was established through our partnership with CA Startups and is a strategic pillar of IITM Global’s business in the US.”

“Through concentrated investment, we aim to build a platform that accelerates deep technology companies from the laboratory to the global market, while attracting global innovation to India,” he said.

Narayan said the total investment planned for the development of the center is US$7.5 million, including a US$4.5 million greenfield investment from IITM Global.

The IITM Center is strategically located close to Silicon Valley and aims to be a launch pad for Indian deep tech startups to access global capital, markets, mentorship and partnerships.

The Menlo Park center will focus on advancing deep technology research and commercialization while also serving as a center for start-up incubation and global market access.

It aims to strengthen industry-academia partnerships and promote venture capital participation to support the scaling of high-potential innovations.

IITM Global also announced plans to establish a second center on the East Coast of the United States, further strengthening its presence in key innovation corridors.

The East Coast Center will complement these efforts by connecting with the leading policy, financial, and academic ecosystem to build a more comprehensive presence in the United States.

A delegation from IIT-Madras Global, consisting of founders of deep tech startups incubated by IIT-M, met Indian Ambassador to the United States Vinay Mohan Kwatra.

“Had an insightful conversation on the sidelines of #SelectUSASummit with IITM Global Head Thirumalai Madhavnarayan and prominent founders of five IIT Madras incubated deep tech startups – Atri AI, Zerowatt, Satori XR, Greenvironment and @ePlaneCompany,” Kwatra said in a post on X.
