Federal immigration officers with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shot and killed a man during an enforcement operation in Stanislaus County, California, on Tuesday morning, authorities said. The shooting happened at a parking lot along Interstate 5 near Sperry Boulevard in Patterson.The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that ICE agents were involved in the incident and that local law enforcement officers were not directly involved in the shooting. After the incident, a “suspect” was sent to a nearby hospital for treatment.ICE identified the man who was shot and killed as Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez. Hernandez is wanted in El Salvador on suspicion of murder, according to a statement from the acting director of ICE.During the attempted arrest, the man allegedly used his vehicle to try to run over an officer, ICE officials said. In response, agents fired their weapons. The agency described the shooting as a defensive shooting.The shooting closed multiple on- and off-ramps at Interstate 5 and Sperry Boulevard for much of the day. Drivers are warned of severe traffic delays and asked to avoid the area.The FBI is cooperating with federal and local authorities in the investigation.
