The tragedy occurred early Sunday morning, leaving at least eight people dead. Some of the slain children were identified as Elkins’ “descendants.” The two women Elkins shot in the head were also related to him, but Shreveport police have not revealed the exact nature of that relationship.
The Shreveport Police Department has not yet identified the deceased children, saying formal identification of the eight bodies is still pending.
As of now, it is unclear what led to the shooting, and the Shreveport Police Department continues to investigate investigation.
The mass shooting occurred in the 300 block of West 79th Street near Linwood Avenue, where eight children and two women were shot. He then grabbed a car and fled the scene, with police chasing him.
The Shreveport Police Department said he went first to Harrison Street between Wallace Avenue and Bernstein Avenue, then to Brompton Lane near Long Acres Avenue, where he was shot and killed by police.

Although not officially confirmed, social media posts suggest Elgin may be suffering from mental health issues. In one of his posts, he asked God to “protect my thoughts.” “Dear God, today I am asking you to help me guard my thoughts and emotions,” the April 9 post read.
