New Delhi: Himanta Biswa Sarma sworn in on Tuesday Chief Minister of Assam The second term in a row strengthens the grip of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Development Alliance in the northeastern state after a landslide victory in the assembly elections.Sarma, 57, became Assam’s first non-Congress leader to serve as chief minister for a second consecutive term. Sarma and four other legislators were sworn in and kept secret by Lakshman Prasad Acharya at a grand ceremony held at Kanapara Veterinary College, Guwahati.
The four legislators who were sworn in along with Himanta Biswa Sarma were BJP leaders Ajanta Nyog and Rameshwar Telly, Atul Bora of the Asom Gana Party (AGP) and Charan Boro of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF).
Ajanta Neog retained the Golaghat Assembly seat for the sixth consecutive term, defeating Congress candidate Bitupan Saikia by 43,759 votes. She got 1,02,212 votes while Saikia got 58,453 votes. Neog is Assam’s first woman finance minister and the state’s longest-serving woman MLA, representing Golaghat since 2001. She served as a minister in former chief minister Tarun Gogoi’s Congress government before joining the BJP in 2020. She became finance minister in Sarma’s cabinet in 2021.
Atul Bora retained the Bokakhat constituency for the third consecutive term by defeating Raijor Dal candidate Hari Prasad Saikia by 60,537 votes. Bora received 80,987 votes while Saikia received 20,450 votes. Bora, a former AASU leader in the anti-foreigner movement, represented Golaghat from 1996 to 2016 before switching to Bokakhat. He served as minister in two departments
Charan Boro, who represents the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), won the Mazbat constituency with a huge margin in the 2026 assembly elections. He received 84,718 votes, beating his nearest competitor by more than 55,000 votes. His induction into the cabinet marked the formal return of BPF to the NDA alliance, which Himanta Biswa Sarma termed a “milestone of peace” in Bodoland.
Rameshwar Teli, who earlier served as federal minister for petroleum and natural gas and labor and employment, has returned to state politics. A prominent leader of Assam’s tea tribe community, Teli served two terms as Dibrugarh MP before returning to the Assam Legislative Assembly. His joining is expected to bring significant administrative experience from the Center to the state cabinet.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Guwahati on Monday evening ahead of the oath-taking ceremony and attended the event along with several senior leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the National Democratic Alliance. Prime Minister Modi was received by Sarma and other BJP leaders at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport.Senior leaders present at the meeting included Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and Bharatiya Janata Party national president Nitin Nabin.Several federal ministers including Sarbananda Sonowal, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Chirag Paswan were also present at the ceremony.The event was also attended by chief ministers and deputy chief ministers of the BJP-ruled states, top industrialists, PKR personalities and party workers. Officials said more than 100,000 people attended the ceremony.The Bharatiya Janata Party-led New Democratic Alliance received a huge mandate in the Assam Assembly elections, winning 102 seats in the 126-member House of Representatives. The BJP alone won 82 seats, while alliance partners AGP and BPF bagged 10 seats each.This will be the third consecutive NDA government in Assam since the alliance first came to power in 2016 under the leadership of Sarbananda Sonowal.
