A Greek national has been charged for allegedly gathering information on Iranian journalists living in the UK, an alleged espionage case in London has raised new concerns about Britain’s foreign-linked surveillance operations. The case centers on 36-year-old Greek citizen Ioannis Aidinidis, who appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 29 May charged under UK national security legislation.British prosecutors accused Edinidis of conducting surveillance and information-gathering operations on an Iranian journalist based in London between 2024 and 2025.Investigators believe the activities were related to obtaining information that could assist foreign intelligence services, according to court proceedings reported by BBC News. The accusations attracted immediate attention as Britain repeatedly warned of growing threats to journalists, dissidents and critics of foreign governments living in the country.

Westminster court hears charges

During the hearing, prosecutors told the court Aidinidis was accused of engaging in conduct that could assist foreign intelligence services. The charges were brought under the terms of the UK’s new national security legislation, which was introduced to strengthen the UK’s response to espionage, hostile state activity and foreign interference.Court documents cited by prosecutors said Edinidis conducted surveillance on and gathered information about an Iranian journalist who lived and worked in London.Authorities have not publicly claimed that the journalist was physically harmed, but prosecutors have argued that the information gathering itself was part of activities related to foreign intelligence interests. The defendant did not enter a plea at the initial hearing.Proceedings before the district judge resulted in the case being transferred to the Central Criminal Court, commonly known as the Old Bailey, where more serious national security and criminal cases are often heard. The next phase of proceedings is expected to take place in the coming weeks.

British police investigation

The investigation is being led by officers from the Metropolitan Police’s Counter-Terrorism Command, which handles many of the UK’s most sensitive national security cases.A police spokesman confirmed the charge followed a detailed investigation into alleged surveillance activity in the UK.The prosecution is being handled by the Crown Prosecution Service, which approved the charge after reviewing evidence gathered by investigators. In recent years, British security agencies have become increasingly concerned about so-called foreign threats, particularly cases involving the intimidation, surveillance or harassment of journalists, activists and political dissidents living in the UK.The UK government has repeatedly said that protecting individuals from transnational repression remains a national security priority.Officials warned that hostile nation-state activities could include surveillance operations, information gathering, online intimidation campaigns and attempts to track individuals seeking asylum abroad.

Concerns grow over safety of British journalists

The case comes amid heightened concerns about the safety of Iranian journalists working in the UK.In recent years, several UK-based Persian-language media organizations have reported security threats against staff, leading to increased protective measures and police involvement. The Metropolitan Police has previously confirmed a number of investigations related to alleged threats from foreign actors targeting individuals living in the UK.British intelligence and security officials have also repeatedly highlighted concerns about transnational repression, which refers to attempts by governments or related actors to intimidate, monitor or silence critics abroad.Security experts say the latest cases illustrate the growing overlap between espionage investigations and concerns about press freedom, journalist safety and national security.Although prosecutors have yet to publicly release details about the surveillance methods involved, the case has become one of the highest-profile national security investigations currently underway in the British court system. The charges against Ioannis Aidinidis are still before the courts and UK legal rules mean the defendant is entitled to a fair trial while proceedings continue. As the case progresses to the Old Bailey, investigators, journalists and security officials will be watching closely for what it may reveal about the growing challenges of foreign-linked surveillance operations in the UK.
