Grand Central Station stabbing update: A machete-wielding suspect was shot dead by police after stabbing three people on a subway platform. central station Terminal Saturday morning, authorities said. Now, new details about the suspect and victim have emerged.
According to law enforcement officials, the attack occurred around 9:50 a.m. ET when the man walked onto the platform and a confrontation ensued. Armed with a machete, he reportedly began attacking passengers, injuring three elderly victims.

The victims, who have not yet been identified, are described as a 65-year-old man, a 70-year-old woman and an 84-year-old man. Police said at least one victim was initially in critical condition and all three were taken to hospital and are expected to survive. Two police officers were also taken to the hospital and are currently in stable condition.
Meanwhile, CNN and NBC sources cited officials as saying authorities had identified the suspect. No names have been released yet. According to officials, the situation escalated into a tense confrontation that lasted about 10 minutes. Officers ordered the suspect multiple times to drop his weapon, but he instead walked toward them. He was subsequently shot by police and later died from his injuries.

The suspect is already known to law enforcement and has been arrested before, including for incidents involving threatening behavior and assault with a sharp object, authorities said.
According to reports, the suspect acted strangely on the subway train.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul condemned the violence, saying on social media that “innocent people were attacked in a senseless act of violence.”
“I’m grateful to our brave officers who acted quickly to stop the suspect,” she added on the X (formerly Twitter) platform.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said on Twitter: “I have been informed of an incident that occurred at Grand Central Station this morning. Reports indicate that a man slashed three people with a machete on the platform. When the man did not drop the machete, police opened fire. He has since been pronounced dead.”
“I thank the NYPD for their quick response and preventing further violence. The three victims were transported to the hospital and are thankfully in stable condition. The NYPD is conducting an internal investigation and will release the body-worn camera footage, as it does in all incidents involving officer-involved shootings.”
Police officials, including Jessica S. Tisch, are expected to provide further updates. Investigators said there was no indication at this stage that the incident was terrorism-related.
