‘Good people’: Iran thanks India for receiving first batch of medical aid from New Delhi

New Delhi: The Indian Embassy in Tehran confirmed that the first batch of medical aid from India arrived in Iran on Wednesday. The aid comes as Iran grapples with the fallout from the U.S.-Israeli military operation that began on February 28.

Iran has killed more than 1,300 people and injured more than 7,000 since the conflict began, according to Ali Baleni, Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported 18 attacks on health facilities and confirmed the deaths of eight medical staff.

WHO officials say Iran’s health care system remains largely functional despite the challenges. “The primary health care and health infrastructure is very strong and can currently accommodate the injured,” WHO regional director Hanan Balkhy told Reuters.The World Health Organization also said it has contingency plans in place to provide emergency supplies if the situation worsens. Officials further cited potential health risks from toxic “black rain” caused by smoke from fires at oil facilities that could increase respiratory infections. Emergency medical aid flights from the WHO Center in Dubai were temporarily suspended and have now resumed.
