Good news for Indian travelers: No transit visa required for layover at German airports

Germany has announced that Indian nationals no longer require a transit visa when traveling to another country and having a short layover at a German airport. The new rules take effect on June 3. “This implements the results of Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to India in January this year. It underlines the federal government’s commitment to deepening relations between Germany and India, facilitating the movement of people and further strengthening economic ties,” the German Embassy said in a statement.

What is a transit visa? What does this mean for Indian tourists?

When you travel from country A to country B and transit in country C, you may only need to apply for a visa when you land in country C and transit. This is called a transit visa.Before Germany, France removed India’s transit visa requirement. The bill takes effect on April 10, 2026. France became the first Schengen country to completely cancel transit visas for Indian citizens, while Germany was the first country to announce the news in January. French President Macron announced the decision after his state visit to India in February. During Macron’s visit, France announced a six-month pilot scheme to allow Indian passport holders to transit through French airports without all-terrain vehicles. The pilot is effective immediately. The pilot ran successfully. Airlines updated their check-in systems, Paris-Charles de Gaulle reported no compliance issues and there was a huge increase in connecting bookings from Indian passengers through French airports. In April, France eliminated transit visa requirements.

Cancellation of transit visa does not mean visa-free entry

Canceling a transit visa does not mean that travelers can enter the country. They are only allowed to stay in the transit zone. They couldn’t leave the airport.
