What happened during the car accident?

The single-vehicle crash occurred around 4 p.m. Thursday on the bridge along North Carolina and West Vine streets in Goldsboro, about 50 miles southeast of Raleigh, according to City Councilwoman Brandi Matthews.

Two adults and nine children were on board the bus when it crashed. According to authorities, the bus was taking Dillard Charter Academy students home.

Six students were injured in the crash, but the injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, officials said. The injured child was transported to UNC Wayne Health for evaluation and treatment.

The bus monitor was on board when the driver was evacuated to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville, but officials could not immediately say whether the monitor was injured.

Emergency crews, including firefighters and paramedics, reportedly arrived at the scene within minutes.

It was unclear whether this was the bus’s usual route. Witnesses along Carolina and Vine streets claimed the speed limit was 25 mph. According to neighbors who spoke to WRAL News, the bus appeared to be traveling twice as fast.

Another neighbor said she witnessed multiple U-Haul trucks colliding with the bridge. This was not the first time a large vehicle had hit the bridge.

The neighbor told the local news outlet that “some drivers don’t see the posted signs,” and said she would like to see signage placed on the bridge indicating its height. According to the Google Maps image, the bridge is only 7 feet 6 inches tall.
