A spokesman for California Gov. Gavin Newsom hurled insults at a reporter after she asked for evidence that the Democrat was diagnosed with dyslexia as a child.Newsom’s communications director, Izzy Gardon, responded when Real Clear Politics reporter Susan Crabtree asked via email on Monday about the governor’s medical history, the New York Post reported.According to a screenshot of the exchange shared on
In an earlier email, Crabtree asked for evidence to counter critics who have expressed doubts about Newsom’s previous claims of a dyslexia diagnosis. The Democrat has revealed in the past that he was diagnosed with dyslexia in 1972 when he was around 5 years old.Newsom’s diagnosis is back in the spotlight after he mentioned the disease at an event in Atlanta Sunday night to promote his new memoir. After that interview, Newsom faced criticism for being accused of racial discrimination for citing his mediocre SAT scores in a conversation with Atlanta’s black mayor, Andre Dickens.“I’m not trying to impress you, I’m just trying to impress you, ‘I’m just like you. I’m not better than you.’ I’m a 960 SAT guy,” Newsome told Dickens.“I don’t mean to offend anyone,” the potential 2028 Democratic contender continued. “If you get a 940, I’m not going to try to perform there… You’ve never seen me read a speech because I can’t read a speech.”As backlash grew over his remarks, Newsom began firing back at critics with an expletive-laden rant.“You didn’t turn a blind eye to the President of the United States of America releasing a simian video of the President. [Barack] Obama may call African countries assholes, but are you going to call me a racist for talking about my lifelong struggle with dyslexia? “Newsom was furious at X.“Stop giving me your fake anger.”
