England Cricket Board (ECB) managing director Rob Key responded to the all-rounder’s comments Liam Livingstonstated that despite the player’s recent criticism of the team’s management, he is still competing for the option.Livingstone, who has not played international cricket since England went winless in the ICC Champions Trophy under former captain Jos Buttler, told ESPNCricinfo that management, including Key and head coach Brendan McCallumnot showing enough care after the player went offline. He also said Key failed to communicate with him before his central contract expired, claiming he was told there were “100 more important things to do”.Speaking after England’s Ashes Trophy review after England’s 4-1 loss to Australia, Key responded: “Look, I’m not going to have a private conversation. Obviously, as I see it, there’s another side to the conversation. What I said to Liam at the end of a rather testy phone call was to say the least. [was that] There’s no way I think a player of Liam Livingstone’s quality wouldn’t make the England squad. “Key added that Livingstone had discussed a return during Sri Lanka’s limited-overs tour ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup and will remain in the squad as long as he performs well.“We debated him during the Sri Lanka series. Liam Livingstone is a very good player and we want to see him get back to his best, score runs and then get back into the England team,” he told Sky Sports. He also noted that Livingstone had been considered for leadership positions. “We miss him too [as] For him to be captain at some stage when we don’t have all the senior players. ” Key said, referring to the ODI series against West Indies in late 2024.“That’s how highly we rate him. I still have a lot of time with Liam Livingstone and there’s no reason for a 32-year-old to have their England career end,” he added.Livingstone had earlier described the team environment as a clique, saying: “If you’re in, you’re in, if you’re not, no one cares about you.” Key rejected that notion and said the reaction was to be expected when players were left out.“Unfortunately, there’s always going to be a time when you’re in these roles – especially when you’re in trouble – you’re always going to have people who are going to upset you and come back to you, and that’s absolutely fine,” Key said.He also pointed out that it would be impossible to make everyone happy with such a role. “But at the end of the day, Liam Livingstone, or any player who plays county cricket at the beginning of the summer, they have the opportunity to play for England,” he added.Livingstone has arrived in India indian premier leagueAfter signing for Rs 13 crore, he will play for Sunrisers Hyderabad. His team will begin their campaign against Royal Challengers Bangalore, the team he represented last season. He had a stellar IPL season with Punjab Kings in 2022, scoring 437 runs in 14 innings at an average of 36.42 and a strike rate of over 182, including 4 fifties. In the next three seasons, he scored 502 runs in 27 games at an average of 22.81, including 3 50-runs and a strike rate of over 150.Representing England last year, he scored 74 runs in five T20I matches at an average of 14.80, a strike rate of 127.58, and a highest score of 43.His performances in domestic matches have helped him regain limelight ahead of the IPL auction.
