‘End of an era’: Former world number one Jamie Murray (brother of Andy Murray) retires after 36 years, seven Grand Slams

Former world number one doubles player Jamie Murray has announced his retirement from professional tennis at the age of 40, ending a career that spanned more than three decades and included seven Grand Slam titles, 34 tour-level trophies and davis cup Victory with his brother.Murray confirmed the decision in a statement and on social media, sharing a post that included photos from throughout his career, including childhood ones, along with a message reflecting on the end of a journey that began in the early days and ended at the highest level of doubles. “My tennis journey ends after 36 years. I feel very lucky and privileged for all the amazing experiences this great sport has given me,” he said.

Doubles career, peaking in 2016

Born in Glasgow on February 13, 1986, Murray built his career primarily in doubles and reached the ATP World No. 1 position in 2016, becoming the first British man to be ranked No. 1 in doubles, a position he held for nine weeks.During his career, he competed in 1,019 doubles matches at ATP Tour level, winning 589 matches and claiming 34 ATP doubles titles, as well as 5 mixed doubles titles (39 total). He also received more than $7 million in prize money. His first tour title was won in 2007, and his last title was won at the Belgrade Open in November 2024. His last professional appearance was at the 2025 U.S. Open, where he partnered with Ivan Dodig but lost to Rafael Matos and Marcelo Melo in the first round of men’s doubles.

Grand Slam success in doubles and mixed doubles

Murray’s seven Grand Slam titles were in men’s doubles and mixed doubles. He won two Grand Slam men’s doubles titles with Bruno Suarez at the 2016 Australian Open and US Open. In addition to this, he has won five mixed doubles titles and won at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open with the likes of Jelena Jankovic, Martina Hingis and Bethany Matek-Sands. His game, based around net play, earned him recognition throughout the circuit, with his brother later describing him as “one of the best volleyers in the sport.”

One of the defining moments of his career came in 2015 when he partnered Andy Murray in the Davis Cup. The pair won the decisive doubles match in the final against Belgium, helping Britain win their first Davis Cup title since 1936. Murray’s career also includes four consecutive Olympic appearances starting in Beijing in 2008, and he continues to be involved in the sport outside of competition.Off the court, he starred in the Tennis Channel series My Life in Tennis in 2020 and has served as Tournament Director of the Queen’s Club ATP Events since 2023 His contribution to British tennis, both in performance and longevity, was recognized by Lawn Tennis Association chief executive Scott Lloyd, who said: “Jamie’s achievements of playing more than 1,000 tour-level matches, winning seven Grand Slam titles, Davis Cup glory and reaching world number one speak for themselves. “We wish him all the best as he embarks on the next phase of his illustrious career.”

End a chapter

Murray followed his brother into retirement, ending an era in British tennis in which both men were active on the professional circuit. In his own address, he concluded by thanking those closest to him. “Thank you to Mum, Dad, Andy, Al, Alan, Louis and Thomas for your incredible support, hard work and sacrifice throughout my career, enabling me to achieve everything I have achieved in the game. “To everyone who has helped/supported me – I thank you all! Excited to get out into the real world!”
