EC asks 22 states, Union Territories to prepare for final phase of SIR expected to be held in April | India News

New Delhi: election committee Twenty-two states and union territories, including Delhi, were asked on Thursday to complete preparations related to the Special Intensified Revision (SIR) at the earliest as the exercise “is expected to start from April”.Once the exercise is completed, all states and union territories will be covered. To Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Ladakh, Maharashtra, Manipur In a letter from the Chief Electoral Officers of the states of Bengal, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Delhi, Odisha, Punjab, Sikkim, the poll bodies of Tripura, Telangana and Uttarakhand said that the Pan-India Voter List SIR It was ordered in June last year.To counter the “poll joli” charges raised by the opposition Congress, the Election Commission conducted SIRs on the electoral rolls of 13 states and Union Territories this year and made a “special revision” in Assam. Similar exercises will be held in the remaining 22 states and union territories this year. While the exercise that put the Election Commission in the news was done in Bihar, it is currently being conducted in 12 states and Union Territories with nearly 600 million voters. The remaining 400 million voters will cover these 17 states and 5 Union Territories. In Assam, “Special Revision” was completed on February 10 instead of SIR.Due to a variety of reasons, SIR frequently adjusts its schedule of nine states and three UTs.Like Bihar, political parties in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal have also approached the Supreme Court challenging the decision.Recently, TMC chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee personally approached the Chief Justice of India against the poll cleaning exercise in the state. While the EC was preparing for the SIR in Bihar, its officials claimed that its ground staff had spotted several nationals from Bangladesh, Nepal and Myanmar. But in the end, the pollsters did not share any numbers or evidence about those who were not eligible to be on the voter rolls.Opposition parties have called the Election Commission’s claim a ploy to impose SIR on voters who are at odds with the BJP and its allies.
