Earthquake hits near San Jose, California, residents shaken

The earthquake’s magnitude was initially reported as 5.1, but the US Geological Survey later revised it to 4.9.

The USGS said it struck one kilometer southeast of Boulder Creek, California. The U.S. government science agency said the quake struck at around 8:41:25 UTC (around 1:41 a.m. in California) at a depth of 10.9 kilometers.

Another user wrote: “The 5.1 magnitude earthquake in San Jose was the strongest I have felt since 2010.”

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The earthquake’s strong shaking lasted for 10 to 20 seconds and was felt in Bitung in North Sulawesi province and Ternate city in neighboring North Maluku province, according to the disaster management agency. These provinces border the Molucca Sea, the epicenter of the earthquake.

Initial assessments showed light to severe damage to parts of Ternate, including a church and two houses. The agency said damage assessment at Bitung was still ongoing.

Indonesia’s search and rescue agency reported that a 70-year-old woman died and another resident was injured in a building collapse in Manado, North Sulawesi province. At least three injured people were hospitalized in Ternate.

Videos released by rescue agencies showed damaged buildings and flattened homes, and television stations showed scenes of people rushing outside and gathering in the streets to avoid the risk of building collapse.
