New Delhi: As India finalizes details of trade deal with US, a report suggests the Narendra Modi-led government is willing to wait for the US president to step down Donald TrumpThe terms of the trade agreement, Washington was informed of the same.According to news outlet Bloomberg, the national security adviser Ajit Doval In September last year, India met US Secretary of State Rubio and told him that India would not be bullied by Trump or his top aides.Doval told U.S. officials that the Modi government was willing to wait out Trump’s term because it had faced other hostile U.S. administrations in the past.Doval also told Rubio that New Delhi hopes Trump and his aides will reduce their public criticism of India in order to get relations between the two countries back on track.Previously, the US President announced a trade agreement with India on Monday, cutting tariffs from 50% to 18%.“It was an honor to speak with Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India this morning. He is one of my best friends and a strong and respected leader in India. We talked about many things, including trade and ending the war with Russia and Ukraine. He agreed to stop buying Russian oil and buy more from the United States and possibly Venezuela,” Trump announced in a social media post on Truth Social.Earlier on Tuesday, Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said the “much-awaited trade deal” with the US has been successfully concluded.“The long-awaited trade deal with the United States of America has been successfully concluded. This is an important trade deal that was finalized last night under the leadership of the Prime Minister Narendra Modikeeping in mind the interests of the country and people,” Goyal said.“This is an agreement that will further strengthen India’s future. On behalf of 1.4 billion citizens, I thank Prime Minister Modi and congratulate everyone as this is a landmark achievement for the country,” he added.Goyal also said the government has protected sensitive sectors of the Indian economy, especially the agriculture and dairy industries. “Sensitive sectors of the Indian economy, especially agriculture and dairy, are protected in the US trade deal. We are seeing reports from across the country; there is a general enthusiasm,” he said.Further, he added that the two countries will soon issue a joint statement with details, which we will soon sign between the United States of America and India.“We represent the people of India. We represent the national interest. Today, 1.4 billion Indians are celebrating a trade deal that is in the final details of being worked out between the two countries’ negotiating teams. We will soon be releasing a joint statement between the two countries, as well as the details that we will sign between the United States and India once the final understanding of the agreement is signed and the joint statement is finalized. The technical process has been completed. Full details will be shared,” the minister said.“But I can assure the people of India. I can assure the 1.4 billion brothers and sisters that this is an agreement that every Indian will be proud of. This will protect the interest of every Indian, provide tremendous opportunities to all Indians and will protect sensitive areas,” he added.Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump agreed to deepen bilateral trade relations and set a goal of more than doubling trade to $500 billion by 2030.Negotiations began in March 2025, and the two sides conducted multiple rounds of negotiations and sent delegations, but were shocked by the imposition of import tariffs on Indian goods, which were escalated to 50%.In 2025, the two countries will engage in several stages of formal negotiations and multiple back-channel contacts to reach an agreement.
